SPONGED BERGAMOT (Citrus x bergamia) from Reggio Calabria

In Reggio Calabria, where the scent of citrus mingles with the sea breeze, a nearly forgotten tradition endures thanks to Vincenzo Amodeo, the last Spiritaro. It is from his hands and his expertise that the bergamot we use in Bergamoud is born.

Between the 1940s and 1970s, the city was filled with spiritari, artisans who extracted bergamot essence using only their hands and natural sea sponges. Their days began at dawn with the harvest of the fruits, which were cut and soaked in water and lime before being left to dry under the sun. Only at dusk did the true extraction begin. Seated on wooden stools, the spiritari pressed with incredible precision the peels against sea sponges, collecting the precious essence in containers below.

The result is a luminous, delicate, and pure essence, created through a slow and meticulous method that has now almost disappeared, replaced by industrial processes. Yet between the views of the Strait and the shadows of the Aspromonte, the spirit of the spiritari lives on in Vincenzo’s hands and stories, the last guardian of an art infused with history, patience, and passion.
