Figo

Figo means "cool" in Italian, but it also sounds like the English word "fig". And this is exactly what this perfume is: a cool fig fragrance.

In perfumery, the smell of figs cannot be directly extracted — not from the leaves, the fruit, or the twigs. The scent of fig is a fantasy, an illusion, created when milky, coconutty lactonic notes blend with vegetal and green elements, mostly synthetics.

Figo is a bit more sophisticated than that. It is a woody, enveloping fragrance, built on the long-lasting foundation of amyris essential oil, sandalwood oil, and vetiver absolute from Italy. This is complemented by ever-so-slightly smoky notes of cedarwood and tobacco, along with crisp green accents of fresh fig sap, cucumber-infused vodka, and fresh patchouli leaves.

Vetiver oil, often sourced from Haiti or India, is derived from the roots of a deep-rooted plant. Not many people know that vetiver is also planted along roadside slopes and embankments to prevent landslides and soil erosion, especially in hilly or mountainous areas — including in Italy! The vetiver absolute used in this fragrance is locally sourced (no roads were harmed in the making of this absolute).

VETIVER ESSENTIAL OIL (Chrysopogon zizanioides cv. Monto) from Tuscany

The vetiver we use comes from the Tuscan coast in Massa, where we met Valentina, the founder of Vetiver Toscana. Thanks to her experience and passion, we were among the first to extract and use this Italian variety in perfumery.

The variety cultivated by Valentina, Vetiver Monto, is perennial and resilient, able to survive cold winters as long as there are no persistent frosts, and can live up to 150 years. It is an extraordinary plant with dense, fibrous roots that can reach up to 4 meters in depth, which is why it is cultivated not only for perfumery but also to stabilize lands at risk of landslides, remediate areas contaminated with heavy metals, and purify polluted water, making it a highly studied plant for phytoremediation.

For perfumery purposes, vetiver in Tuscany is grown in loose, sandy soil inside tubes embedded in the ground, making it easier to harvest the roots, which are then used for distillation.
